Pregnancy is one of the most special stages in a woman’s life.
Our world turns upside down, hormonal changes start affecting us in different areas of our life such as our body, our emotions, our relationships…
The body begins to change, and one of the changes that almost all of us experience is the so-called “pregnancy gingivitis,” characterized by increased gum bleeding in the second and third trimester, especially in the eighth month.
As a dentist, I have treated women who had healthy gums before pregnancy and whose gums bled almost spontaneously during gestation.
This is due to hormonal changes, increased estrogen and progesterone, collagen production, vascular permeability, and the gums become much more reactive and sensitive.
Other women say that with each pregnancy they have lost a tooth, often due to the small erosions of the enamel caused by nausea and vomiting, changes in salivary composition, lack of salivation that some pregnant women experience, and change in eating habits that predispose to dental caries.
For all these reasons, prevention and proper oral hygiene are so important.
When I say “proper,” I don’t mean brushing harder. On the contrary, in this special period of our life, and when the gums bleed, we must treat them with special affection and care.
It is advisable to consult a specialist who can tell us how to act and thus prevent dental diseases.
In this stage, we also have many doubts… Is it good to undergo dental treatment while pregnant?
Dental treatments are safe and beneficial and are part of comprehensive care during pregnancy, with the second trimester being the most suitable for any treatment.
As a dentist and a woman, I believe that the mouth is one of the most intimate parts of our body and therefore requires a careful and respectful approach, especially during this time of our life when we tend to be more sensitive and anxious. That’s why it’s so important for us dentists to create a safe and trusting environment when treating pregnant women in particular.
